Narayanpur
The Journey
The word of God has been unequivocal in its stress on social action as part of practical virtue and as religious duty divinely ordained. Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, during His earthly life, exemplified this abiding concern through his practice, parables, and preaching. Jesus openly declared that His mission was to heal the sick, rescue the lost, and save the doomed.
He was not just concerned about the economically disadvantaged: his sympathies lay with victims of social prejudice and exploitation. This very same vision underlies the formation and functioning of RAKSHAK TRUST. We, at Rakshak, do not claim to have realized this by virtue of our own socio-political or theological analysis. On the contrary, we believe it was the firm, though invisible, hand of the Lord who led us to this realization through our study of His word and abiding in prayer.
Footprints to Narayanpur:
Our earliest steps in social action were taken in response to events that happened to touch us either as individuals or as a group: the discrimination and neglect suffered by a large number of refugee children in a nearby village, the trauma of a teen-aged girl who ran away from home to escape harsh treatment by a cruel brother, the plight of tribal children rendered destitute by the death or desertion of their parents. Initially, we were bewildered by questions of the consequences of whatever we would decide to do in response to these situations. But, as we waited upon the Lord, He seemed to be guiding us slowly but surely for these and much greater, things.
His invisible hand guided us to Narainpur, a small town about two thousand kilometers away from our home ground, in the tribal belt of Bastar district in the present state of Chattisgarh. Bastar is famous for its natural beauty because of the vast forest area – about two-thirds of Bastar is covered by forest. The need for education and medical help was great in these areas. We could not do much about the medical need. But the Lord led us to starting an orphanage for orphaned children. Later this was converted into a hostel for the children of these tribal people. In purely human terms, we had everything going against us. But we felt that we were following a divine plan, and that He who made the heaven and the earth would provide. Yes, He has provided, always and in full measure.
Establishing Hostel:
The hostel in Narainpur today offers food, shelter, clothing and school fees to 100 tribal children in the age range of 5 to 20 years. They stay in the hostel and go to school or college. They experience parental love and care provided by our dedicated team headed by Miss.Dorothy and Miss.Sheila Hamilton. Most significant, however, is their realization that the love they experience is inspired by the greatest instance of sacrificial love in human history—the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which brought salvation to the whole world.
The miracle performed by our Lord with five loaves and two fish keeps happening in our midst. We, who found it difficult to raise Rs. 300/- for a Sunday evening snack for 60 refugee children a few years back, are now able to pay about Rs. 100,000/ per month towards the running of this hostel. We maintain our trust in His faithfulness. And we have experienced His faithfulness in abundant measure so far.
